Mission Auxiliary Committee

The existing Wellington City Mission Auxiliary Committee was set up in 1984.  A precursor was the ‘Ladies Sewing Guild’ originally formed in 1924, and was made up of a group of ladies who sewed and sold items for the City Mission. 

The current group began with an alliance of sixteen women whose special function was to raise money for The Mission standing behind their motto “Put the icing on the cake.”  Their first major fundraiser was a cocktail party and art showing at the BNZ head office, and by all accounts was a great success.  These volunteers also helped by taking elderly to the ballet and setting up and maintaining the gardens at Kemp House.  The Mission would, at the beginning of each financial year, give the Committee a wish list for fundraising and the members would decide what was appropriate for them. 

They were volunteers doing hands on work with the Mission as well as raising funds, and they continue as such today through; their assistance in the Foodbank, fundraising events including movies, and raising money through selling a series of Mission cookbooks.
