Want to Help? » Leave a gift in your Will
If you support The Mission and are considering leaving a gift in your Will, we'd love to talk to you.
If you choose to do this, you are expressing your passion for the enduring values of The Mission. You are saying something about who you are and how you want to be remembered.
The Mission relies heavily on the generosity of Wellingtonians to fund our services. The income we receive when someone leaves a gift in their Will is a very important part of our fundraising strategy, alongside income received from individual donors, businesses, corporate sponsorship, grants, local Government contracts, sales of goods and services, events, trusts and investments. These gifts allow us to plan ahead, continue with our long-term development and direct funds to where the greatest need is.
There are various ways to leave a gift to The Mission in your Will.
A Specified Amount of Money
This is the most common form of gift which, if given without restriction, can be used by The Mission where it is most needed.
All of the Residue of your Estate
The Mission receives everything remaining in your estate after all other gifts have been distributed.
A Percentage of the Residue of your Estate
After all other gifts have been distributed, The Mission receives a share, as decided by you, of what remains in your estate.
The Mission receives specific assets which you mention by name in your Will, for example, shares, works of art, antiques.
A house, other building, or parcel of land can be left to The Mission, to sell or use as it thinks fit.
The best thing to do is to discuss your wishes with a lawyer. They'll ensure your Will matches your ideals. Please remember, at it's heart a Will should focus on looking after the future of your family and friends first and foremost. It is very important to The Mission, that you take a ‘family first, charity second' approach when leaving a gift to us in your Will.
Suggested wording for leaving two of the most popular bequests:
A Specified Amount of Money
This is the most common form of bequest which, if given without restriction, can be used by The Mission where it is most needed.
I give, devise and bequeath free of all duties to The Wellington City Mission (Anglican) Trust Board (Charities Commission number CC21786) the sum of $.............. for the general purposes of The Mission [or for the specific purposes of .................... ] and I declare that the receipt of the Chief Executive Officer or other responsible officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my trustees.
(It is important that any specific purpose with The Wellington City Mission (Anglican) Trust Board is discussed prior to making a Will as it is important to ensure there will be no issues in using the bequest for that purpose).
All of the Residue of an Estate
The Mission receives everything remaining in a person's estate after all other bequests have been made.
I give, devise and bequeath the whole (or a ......... share) of the residue of my estate both real and personal to The Wellington City Mission (Anglican) Trust Board (Charities Commission number CC21786) and I declare that the receipt of the Chief Executive Officer or other responsible officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my trustees.
(It is strongly advised that a solicitor is involved in drafting a Will or any addition to an existing Will to ensure that the testator's wishes are clearly understood and that the document is legally binding).
What sort of information do you need to give your solicitor to help you write your Will?
When writing a Will, you should consider the value of your assets and subtract all your outstanding financial obligations, in order to work out how much your estate will be worth and also give some thought as to where the money is to be distributed between family, friends, charities and other organisations. It is important to seek qualified advice from a solicitor when drawing up a Will. If you do not already have a solicitor, you could contact the New Zealand Law Society to obtain a list of solicitors who can help you write your Will:
