Kua Mākona i Whakamaru, our Crisis Recovery Café Kua Mākona i Whakamaru, our Crisis Recovery Café, was established to address a crucial gap in mental health crisis support.

Traditional responses, such as emergency departments and acute inpatient care, can leave individuals feeling unheard, stigmatised, or retraumatised.

Our café space provides an alternative: a non-clinical and welcoming environment where anyone in distress can walk in and receive immediate support.

We surveyed manuhiri who have utilised Kua Mākona i Whakamaru over this past year - the responses outline the value of a service that prioritises empathy, peer support, and a sense of community.

Open 24 hours a day from Thursday through to Monday, Kua Mākona i Whakamaru will continue to provide support to whānau who are experiencing crisis or acute distress throughout 2026.
